Brake Pad Replacement

What Is Brake Pad Replacement and Why Is It Needed?

Brake pad replacement can be a bit of an odd job, as it requires special tools and knowledge concerning how the brake pad sits in the framework and how that framework installs onto the wheel. It's fairly simple for a trained technician who works with cars every day, but can be confusing for a casual driver to do every few years and have to figure it out each time. When you consider what brakes do and why they are important, it quickly becomes clear you want the job done right. The expense is not excessive and is well worth knowing the brakes were installed correctly and will do their job right.

The Difference Between Front Brake Pad Replacement and Rear Brake Pad Replacement

With some cars, the front and rear brakes are the same disc style. However, older cars may still be equipped with drum brakes on the rear wheels. This is because the front brakes are actually more important and create most of the stopping power a car needs. The drum brakes in the rear are more expensive to install and work on compared to disc brakes and work well for the lighter use they're subjected to. In either case or if all four brakes are to be changed at once, the car will go up on the shop's lift to have the wheels removed, then the brakes can be accessed to either be inspected or changed as appropriate.

What Can Happen When Brakes Go Bad

The fact is, if a brake fails unexpectedly, the three other brakes will stop the car. The brakes are too important not to have multiple fail-safe systems in place. When the brakes begin to wear out, they generally are all getting thin, or at least the front ones need replacement at the same time, or both rear brakes need to be replaced. Modern cars are going to display an alert on the dashboard when it's time for brake service, and brake pads have a thin wire set at a specific depth in them to start squealing when the brake is worn down past its intended life.
